About Us
In 1994, the year Victoria hosted the Commonwealth Games, the VCCA brought dragon boat racing to the Inner Harbour as a demonstration event. It has since become an annual event under the sponsorship of the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival Society. A number of present and past VCCA board members still sit on the Society Board.
The VCCA and its members continue to work towards building bridges and economic ties with local businesses and other Chinese organizations, both domestically and abroad. We have strong ties with our sister city Soo Chou, China. This relationship has included receiving visiting delegations over the years.
Each year, the VCCA takes on a number of initiatives through special events, to support needy charities such as:
Santa’s Anonymous Hoy Sun Benevolent Association Chinese Cemetery Restoration Project Victoria Police Historical Society Intercultural Association of Greater Victoria Greater Victoria Hospital Foundation Chinatown Lions Club United Way of Greater Victoria Victoria Chinatown Community Care Foundation Victoria Chinatown Care Center Recently, the VCCA supported the School of Business at Camosun College by establishing a scholarship in perpetuity for a deserving student in the Entrepreneurship Development Programme.
In 2008, the VCCA under the guidance of Sinclair Mar and Amanda Mills, organized and presented two very successful events celebrating the anniversary of the arrival of the first Chinese Pioneers into Canada. More information about these events and their legacy can be found at www.150goldenmountain.ca
The VCCA membership elects on an annual basis, a Board of Directors from its members to oversee its administration, initiatives, events, and regular monthly meetings. From within this elected board, there are five key executive positions: President, two Vice Presidents, Secretary, and Treasurer – referred to as the executive board.
Currently, the executive and board members for 2008/2009 are as follows:
